Gainesville Catholic Worker
The Gainesville Catholic Worker Community was inspired by the earliest
Christian communities as well as the more recent Catholic Worker movement. We
are committed to a life of prayer, scripture study and cultural critique. We
stand in solidarity with the marginalized and engage in "works of mercy" by
sharing food with the hungry, giving hospitality and companionship to the
homeless, and visiting the imprisoned, sick or dying. We strive for true
discipleship to Jesus by engaging in an alternative Biblically-rooted economy
and resisting violence and injustice through protest. Our outreach includes:
- Breakfast Brigade: providing breakfast for labor pool workers.
- Dorothy's Cafe: serving cafe-style dinners in our home on Sunday
evenings.
- Catholic Worker House: providing hospitality for the homeless.
- Anchor Center/Sidney Lanier: tending a garden for homeless and disabled
children.
Individual community members are involved in outreaches including the Migrant
Worker Ministry, advocacy for the homeless, sustainable food systems advocacy,
anti-death penalty work, and more. Both one-time and long-term volunteers are
needed. For more information, see our brochure in the lobby of St. Augustine's
parish office and contact us at 352.271.6941 or
